Fowlmead 50/12 Hour
Betteshanger Marathon
0800/0900 Saturday 14th April

Hope you're all fit and ready for this Saturday's Fowlmead 50 / 12 hour / Betteshanger Marathon! Please take a read through the details below and refer to the event website for more information if required...

Registration for all the events will be up at the start/finish/base camp area at the top of the access road to the tarmac track, there is only one road up there, so we shouldn't be too tricky to find. (The FAQ page has a map.)

We are having three events running concurrently...

1) Fowlmead 50

Runners will receive a yellow number and your task for the day is to run 25 two mile laps. At the end of any lap you may choose to "ring out" and finish in which case you'll have joined the 12 hour challenge run. If you complete 25 laps then you'll receive the "Fowlmead 50" medal but if you drop down you'll receive a "Fowlmead Challenge" medal or "Betteshanger Marathon" medal if you stop at 13 laps.

2) 12 Hour Challenge

You'll receive a white number. Running concurrently with the Fowlmead 50 is a 12 hour challenge run, as long as you complete one lap you'll receive a Fowlmead Challenge medal and even if you complete 25 or more, you'll still only receive this medal.(If you stop at 13 laps you'll get the "Betteshanger Marathon" medal.

3) Betteshanger Marathon

You'll receive a white number and start at 0900. You can "ring out" after any lap if you wish and swap in to the 12 Hour Challenge event, and receive the Fowlmead Challenge medal, otherwise you'll be done at 12.96 laps and receive the Betteshanger Marathon medal.

All events are subject to an absolute cut off of 2000 (or twelve hours after the start) - even if you finish in 12:00:01 that won't count and you'll be deemed to have not completed that lap. (Seriously the park shuts at 2000 and sunset is 1928. This is a hard cut off. It'll be really pretty dark by 2000 but you shouldn't need head torches.)

If you complete 13 laps you'll be credited with an official marathon finish, 14 or more an ultra finish.

The lap is slightly longer than 2 miles by about 30 yards which is handy for anyone who "rings out" at 13 laps as that's 26.2 miles rather than 26!

As long as you complete one lap, you are a finisher, you cannot DNF at any of these events.

Course

It's 100% lovely flat tarmac, road shoes nomatter the weather. For navigation purposes just follow the pink/blue line but please run the shortest running line as that's how the course was measured!

Lap Counting

At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!

Weather

Looks like reasonable running weather, light cloud, high of 14C, chance of sunshine and very little chance of rain, bit of a breeze but nothing silly.

Vegans

We've got vegan goody bags for lots of you, If you'd like one and you haven't got a little "V" on your number please let us know as we have a couple spare or if we give you a "black" goody bag then please ask for a "blue" one.

Coke

I know a few folk don't drink so if you are one of those and don't want the can of beer or cider in the goody bag then please say and we'll trade you for some coke, we've got a few cans tucked away for those that prefer that.

Aid Station

None of the usual running nonsense at Base Camp, so no isotonic drinks, fruit or energy gels (OK maybe a few), but there will be cookies, crisps, jelly babies, M&Ms, pringles, nuts and all that sort of thing, there is just going to be the one aid station on the course (and it's about a 2 mile loop) so we'll have both cups of water and squash to drink. We'll have a few more "ultra" goodies than normal as folk will be out for longer than average.

Numbers

Will be allocated at registration.

Litter

Please, please, please don't! We're always on parole at this location and its a nature reserve. We'll have rubbish bags at the start/finish area and there are several more on the route too.

Dogs

Unfortunately due to permit conditions, and hence insurance coverage, we're no longer allowed to let runners run with dogs.

Celebrations

Chris Chandler will be running his 100th marathon! Barry Gerhold will be running his 50th Marathon and Adrian Thomas will be completing his 52 Marathons in 52 weeks!
