St Georges Day Marathon
0900 - Monday 23rd April

Hope you're all fit and ready for the St Georges Day Marathon on Monday. Just a few key facts and reminders.

Please remember that if you signed up a couple of months before the event or so we had to change the location from Deal Sea Front to Betteshanger Country Park a couple of miles away. This is due to the Royal Marines holding a parade to mark the Centenary of the Zebrugge Raid.

As some of you may be aware this is a major construction project taking place at Betteshanger which has necessitated the closure of some paths so we're going to go with a 3.28 mile loop, base camp will be up by the "little house on the prairie" - which is about a quarter mile from cafe/registration area.

We'll have registration at the cafe/toilets, race briefing at about 0845 there, then all walk up to the base camp area for the start. (Course Map is here)

For more details please visit the race website.

Firstly as it's St Georges Day the colours of the day are white and red, or red and white, or failing that red, white and blue! It's not compulsory of course but a sea of red and white on this day would be appropriate and fancy dress is most certainly encouraged!

The course is 90% on high quality "bike path" type trail, 10% on pretty decent trail. The course should be suitable for road or trail shoes and is a nice surface to run on, though as the whole location is built on an old shale slag heap if in doubt veer away from that sparkling new virgin white pair, the first 100 yards or so could be a bit muddy, otherwise barring any last minute deluge all should be all dry and fine.

Navigation is going to be simple, generally you're going to be on the wide paths around the edge of the park and around the paved cycling area (which isn't always visible as obscured by trees or banks) turns are marked by little SVN green arrows on posts, there are lots, but they are quite small so do keep an eye out for those. However you cannot get seriously lost nomatter what as the reserve is physically enclosed by a fence (Course Map is here) (Course photos here)

Just remember the golden rules

•  Don't be on the tarmac cycle circuit

•  Don't climb over a fence or go through a gate

•  Watch out for any cyclists or walkers who may be out on path, its not a closed circuit, but it is generally fairly quiet.

Remember this is a marathon only event, 8 laps for the marathon distance and the medal and goody bag will be yours!

Lap Counting

At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!

Weather

Is looking pretty good, nothing but sunshine forecast at the moment all weekend, quite breezy, and a high of 13C so will probably feel a little chilly early, but really not too bad at all!

Vegans

We've got vegan goody bags for some of you, If you'd like one and you haven't got a little "V" on your number please let us know as we have a couple spare or if we give you a "black" goody bag then please ask for a "blue" one.

Coke

I know a few folk don't drink so if you are one of those and don't want the can of beer or cider in the goody bag then please say and we'll trade you for some coke, we've got a few cans tucked away for those that prefer that.

Getting There

No issues that we are aware of.

Aid Station

None of the usual running nonsense at Base Camp, so no isotonic drinks, fruit or energy gels, But there will be cookies, crisps, jelly babies, M&Ms, pringles, nuts and all that sort of thing, there is just going to be the one aid station on the course (and it's about a 3.28 mile loop) and we'll have cups of water and squash to drink.

Cups/Bottles

One of our longer term goals is the reduction of waste at events. One way you can help is by bringing a bottle that can be refilled (you can leave it at base camp if you like), thus saving cup wastage or simply reusing cups at the aid station, we have jugs there and the lovely ladies happy to fill up a cup again for you (or help yourself!)

Neck Warmers/Mugs

We now have SVN "Neck Warmers" (absolutely nothing like the well known buffs) and SVN green mugs for sale at £5 cash on race days.

Toilets

These open at 0800. They are located in/by the cafe/bike hire area. Opposite the car park and to your right as you enter the Park (car park is to the left)

Litter

Please, please, please don't! We're always on parole at this location and its a nature reserve. We'll have rubbish bags at the start/finish area and there are several on the course too.

Dogs

Unfortunately due to permit conditions, and hence insurance coverage, we're no longer allowed to let runners run with dogs.

Numbers

If you're running on Saturday or Sunday with us too then please keep your numbers to use at this event. If you're one of our Elite Number runners, don't forget to bring those along!
