Ranscombe Spring Challenge
0830 - Saturday 4th May

Hope you're all fit and ready for the Ranscombe Spring Challenge! For those who've been to Ranscombe many times over the years please note the revised start time, 0830! Extra 30 minute in bed...

We should be able to fit everyone up at the base camp car park for this weekend if everyone parks sensibly, it's forecast to be dry so should be fine to use the overflow parking if needs be.

Please remember your cups / bottles as we've gone cupless!

For more details please visit the event website.

The course is 90% on natural trail, 10% on bike path type trail. It's mainly good quality single track, double track and wider trail. Trail shoes, would be my first choice, it's been a wet winter, there will likely be a bit of mud in places.

We're going to use the "Red Route" with the Mausoleum add on.

The kind folk at Ranscombe have let us put up lots of little green SVN arrows on the way markers. Please look for these carefully at junctions!

There are a couple of yellow/black temporary signs which override the little ones and a couple of bits of tape on a couple of tricky junctions.

Example below.

If you come to a junction marked with both Green and Red SVN signs follow the Red ones! Otherwise follow the Green signs.

The route can be viewed here. (We'll have a short add on for a 50k option if anyone wants to do 7 laps plus a little bit)

It's a random medal event, we'll have the original style medals to choose from plus the 2018/2019, 2021/22 quadrant medal series plus the 2023 series and a few others as well.

Golden rules

•  Temporary yellow and black arrows take precedence over the fixed little ones!

•  Don't cross any bridges.

•  Go around the Mausoleum and back the way you came, don't go past it!

•  Don't cross any railway lines.

•  If you're on a road and you can't see the start/finish, you're lost.

•  Don't cross the motorway, don't climb fences, it's an enclosed farm, don't do anything daft and you cannot get seriously lost!

Remember this is a timed event, not a fixed distance event. If you complete at least one lap, then you are an official finisher and will receive a medal, a goody bag and an official finish in the results.

You must have started your final loop by 7 hours 00 minutes after the start and as is traditional with ultra events, this is a strictly enforced time limit. As long as you are out of the base camp before the 7 hours 00 minutes limit you'll be able to complete that loop (even if you finish after the 8 hour threshold). There will be no mileage credit for partial laps.

Finally you'll have to tell us when you're finished, not the other way around as it's a timed event, if you wish you can stop, have a rest and continue, or you can just stop!

We'll have an “official finishers bell” for this purpose, (Rachel will be the keeper!) when you're done for the day, ring the bell and the goodies and medal will be yours!

Lap Counting

At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!

Race Registration

Opens at 0745.
Briefing at 0820.
Start at 0830

1) There are 30 or so spaces at base camp, please park sensibly and close to your neighbours and we can get a bunch of cars right here.

2) There are 10 spaces at the entrance, feel free to grab one of these and walk up the hill to base camp.

3) We will have access to the "field parking" - if you've a 4WD and are nice please stick your car in here and walk up to base camp. If its dry 2WD cars are fine in here, if its wet, then less great as on a chalky slope.

Aid Station

The aid station will have some simple sealed supplies, basically assorted packets of crisps and assorted chocolate/cereal bars. We do suggest bringing your own supplies if you feel you need something specific as you can guarantee we'll give you the wrong flavour crisps and those awful little biscuit things you can't stand.

We absolutely suggest bringing along cool boxes etc and any random supplies that you might need or fancy.

Please, please, please don't! We'll have rubbish bags at the start/finish area.

There are two permanent compostable toilets at base camp. This means the 3 P's rule - only pee, pooh and paper are to go down them anything else then please put those in little bins/bags provided. Very important you don't put anything else down there.

One of our longer term goals is the reduction of waste at events and to this end we've gone cupless. Please bring a bottle / cup / mug. We'll have sharpies to mark them and trays at the aid station to store them in. We'll have jugs at the aid station for you to fill them with water and squash.

Unfortunately due to permit conditions, and hence insurance coverage, we're no longer allowed to let runners run with dogs

Elite runners don't forget your Elite numbers!
