The course is 98% on decent surfaces, either crushed limestone or tarmac the forecast for Saturday looks perfect, high of 21C at 1700 and a mild breeze and just cooling off a bit as the night comes in. There will be next to no moonlight as just a day off a New Moon.
There will be a small bit of navigation involved but its very straightforward as generally there is just one path, no road crossings and few turns. The course can be viewed here.
Just remember the golden rules
Turn left through a kissing gate about 1000 yards from the start.
Turn right past the second (broken) kissing gate at the T-Junction.
Turn right at the road at the top of the "hill" in to the old Hoverport
Turn right at the gate, through the hedge, along the edge of the field to get in to the Viking Ship park and then across the grass to get back on to the cycle path.
We'll have it sign posted/chalk marked of course.
Remember this is a timed event, not a fixed distance event. If you complete at least one lap, then you are an official finisher and will receive a Black Hugin Challenge medal, a goody bag and an official finish in the results. If you want to complete the half marathon distance that's 4 laps, a heavy half is 5 laps, the full marathon distance is 8 laps, If you want to complete an ultra distance then 9 loops or more. We'll have a 50k option too for those who want to do 9.5 laps.
You must have started your final loop by 6 hours 00 minutes after the start and as is traditional with ultra events, this is a strictly enforced time limit. As long as you are out of the base camp before the 6 hours 00 minutes limit you'll be able to complete that loop (even if you finish after the 6 hour threshold). There will be no mileage credit for partial laps.
Finally you'll have to tell us when you're finished, not the other way around as it's a timed event, if you wish you can stop, have a rest and continue, or you can just stop!
We'll have an “official finishers bell” for this purpose, (Rachel will be the keeper!) when you're done for the day, ring the bell and the goodies and medal will be yours!
Lap Counting
At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!
Lights
All runners will be required to have a light source with them when they embark on the start of any lap after 1930. The course will be dark and unlit and you will be needing lights, we suggest the brighter the better! Sun down is 1944, nautical twlight ends 2102. So basically 2100 is going to be awful dark, no moon and fair bit of the track is totally unlit.
If you're really stuck then we will have some torches for sale for the princely sum of £3, but they're pretty useless, better than nothing but only just!
Starting Late
We do appreciate that some folk might like to run around in the dark a bit, especially those not planning on running a marathon or ultra type distance so its not compulsory to start at 1700. Whilst the clock will be ticking (so you'll end up with a rubbish time, but as its a distance event that doesn't matter much) and you'll be subject to the event limits if you want to start at 1800/1900 etc that's no problem, just bear in mind that no matter the start time you must be started on your last lap 6:00 after the race start. Goody Bags
If you'd prefer to not have a goody bag for this event, just hand it back when you finish and we'll keep a running total and add £5 to the "SVN Charity of the Month" donation.
