Moonlight Challenge
1300 Saturday 18th February

Image

Hope you're all fit and ready for this Saturday's Moonlight Challenge, if you've done the Moonlight Challenge before do remember we're extended the duration of the event and we're starting earlier than in previous years!

This is a brief summary of the event information, for more details please visit the event website here.

Just as an FYI the Wantsum Brewery that you pass each lap is open 1400-2000 and Mel and Pedro's burger van of yummy delights will be at base camp for pre, mid or post run yumminess!

Please read the little paragraph about we've gone cupless!

Route

The lap is 6.25 miles long (all being well and subject to any last minute changes) and will be signed with red & white tape and yellow & black signs. 90% of the course is on fairly decent farm tracks and cycle paths. However the 10% is going to be a bit muddy and a bit claggy, so shoe choice is tricky. When I say a bit muddy, that's the edge of a ploughed field after winter muddy, virgin white road shoes are probably not the first choice! I'd probably go with old road shoes if you have those. The route can be seen here - click here.

Road

On the outward and inward part of the loop there is about 150m on road near to Brook Farm so do be extra careful here, headphones out, be on the grass where that is present and look out for traffic. it's a quiet road and we'll have signs up, but be careful!

Lights

Sun down is 1716 so you'll need lights at some stage after this.Whilst some areas will have some ambient light it'll still be pitch black in places. There won't be much moonlight I'm afraid as moonset is 14:25... might just glipse it

Lap Counting

At race registration you'll be handed a small laminated lap counting card, attach this to yourself with a safety pin or cable tie. At the end of each loop get this punched through by one of the hole puncher chaps or chappesses. So basically at the end of each lap, get your card punched, or ring the bell!

You need to be out on your last lap 8:30 after event start, even if you finish that last lap after the 10 hour time limit. We'll have a short section of 0.6 mile if you want to do a Half Marathon (2 laps + 0.6 mile) distance and a 1.2 mile section if you would like to do a marathon (4 laps + 1.2 miles). 50k will be 5 laps almost exactly.

Base Camp

Brook Farm is a working farm. It's really not a very good venue for spectators, especially children, being a working farm there are lots of hazards such as rat poison, pesticides and lots of sharp metal machinery.

Fascinating for children, but potentially very dangerous so if children are being brought on site then they must be kept under close adult supervision at all times.

We do request that dogs be kept away too, not only does the location have sheep on it, but there are copious rat traps around at farms, harmful chemicals etc which would do Fido zero good if ingested/licked etc.

Race Registration

Opens: 1200. (We're in the little barn just down the slope from the big barn.)
Race Briefing: 1250
Race Start: 1300

Parking

We're using Brooks Farm for parking which has lots of space, but in a whole bunch of assorted areas so please park sensibly and considerately of others. We'll try to have some folk directing but it's quite a convoluted area so please be sensible and it'll be fine!

Parking is our main concern here so if you are able to car share then please do!

Getting There

Brooks farm is only about 500m from the A299 but the final road is narrow and is part of the running route, so do be extra careful, especially when leaving and be on the watch out for runners.

Aid Station

The aid station will have some simple sealed supplies, basically assorted packets of crisps and assorted chocolate/cereal bars and random bits and bobs. We do suggest bringing your own supplies if you feel you need something specific as you can guarantee we'll give you the wrong flavour crisps and those awful little biscuit things you can't stand.

We absolutely suggest bringing along cool boxes etc and any random supplies that you might need or fancy.

The loops is 6.25 miles long but we'll have "Yumbelievable Junction" out on the course which you'll visit twice on each loop, so basically you're never more than about 2.5 miles from an aid station.

Cupless

One of our longer term goals is the reduction of waste at events and to this end we've gone cupless. Please bring a bottle / cup / mug. We'll have sharpies to mark them and trays at the aid station to store them in. We'll have jugs at the aid station for you to fill them with water and squash.

Numbers

Will be allocated at registration.

Litter

Please, please, please don't! We're using private farm land by very kind permission of Brooks Farm and St Nicholas Farm so please be respectful of that by not littering, we'll have bins at base camp and Jelly Baby Junction.

Dogs

Unfortunately due to permit conditions, and hence insurance coverage, we're no longer allowed to let runners run with dogs.
